Movie Review: Spider-Man: No Way Home

Peter Parker swings to the second-best opening of all time with $260M.

Warning! Spoilers ahead. Also, if you have not seen the other Spiderman movies, highly recommend watching them before this one for all the historical references in this film.

It has finally arrived! Marvel has finally given us Spider-Man: No Way Home and it did not disappoint! It has surpassed estimates with a $260 million domestic opening weekend, beating Avengers Infinity War as the second-highest opening of all time!

Background

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the dangers of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the ask becomes even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.

What Worked

Spider-Man: No Way Home holds no surprises. It delivers what’s expected and whether you cry “spoilers” or not, you likely already know exactly what I mean. Yes! Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are in the film and not just with short cameos, they have a satisfying story arc that takes on many of the villains from their early films and brought so much nostalgia.

All the villains who appeared in the movie also have great motives inside their story arcs that make you feel for them. But the villain who completely stole the show was Willem Defoe's Green Goblin, who is eviler than he was during his movie from two decades ago. There are plenty of similarities between this plot and the one from 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' (my favorite movie btw) in terms of using characters from different universes (multiverse). But Marvel Studios made sure this was a completely different story that gets a little messy at times. Jokes are sometimes overdone and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man character felt a little like the butt of the joke when all three Spider-Men were compared. Another spoiler is the confirmation of Charlie Cox's Daredevil character confirming what Kevin Feige recently said about his return to Marvel Studios. And we loved how he was introduced too! Another part that I did love in this film is when MJ went over Ned's house, and his mom who is Filipino spoke in our native language. I loved that scene as it reminded me of my grandma. There were many emotional moments, and hearing the whole audience all cheer and cry together was beyond something to be a part of.

Did We Like It?

Is that even a question?! Ha! WE LOVED IT! It brought every emotion out of us. No Way Home currently stands at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. This makes it the highest-rated live-action Spider-Man movie of all time, and the second-highest-rated MCU movie behind 2018's Black Panther (96%). In conclusion, this stands as the best Spider-Man live-action film of them all because they managed to combine elements from three different generations without making a mess. Kevin Feige has another blockbuster in his hands. You shouldn't go to the theatre and see this film, you should run and see it as soon as possible. By the way, this film has two mind-blowing post-credit scenes. Overall, I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
