Movie Review: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ is Thor-ific
Do you like to laugh? Do you like a film with a great cast? Do you love the Avengers? Do you like it when Hulk smashes? Or better yet (ladies), do you want to see Thor’s body? If you answer yes to all the above, this film is definitely a must-see. The hilariously self-absorbed God of Thunder returns to the big screens this weekend with Thor: Ragnarok, directed by Taika Waititi. Even though the film is a comedy first and action second in its priorities, it is like getting stuck in an arcade game for two hours, but the best game ever.
This time around, Thor faces his crazy sister Hela, played by Cate Blanchett. Hela aims to make complete her mission to destroy Asgard in regard to her banishment by her father. She is definitely one bad-ass villain and her fight scenes were amazing.
Marvel have modernized, improved and made the character of Thor a more down-to-earth superhero. Thor has always been kind of cool, but this movie solidifies Thor’s importance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well making him one of the more compelling members of the Avengers roster. Waititi brings a sense of flair and style in Thor: Ragnarok. The colors are as vibrant as the characters (which I was afraid it wouldn’t tie in well), yet everything feels somewhat grounded. The side-stories play off the main plot and the secondary characters serve the primary characters. Nothing feels unnecessary.
Thor: Ragnarok is the closest of any of the movies to be an all-out comedy. Truth: the movie is hilarious. Every character in this film gets a moment to shine. Jeff Goldblum plays pretty much himself but in space, or as he is known in Ragnarok, The Grandmaster. Tessa Thompson is introduced as Valkyrie and has become one of the most lovable female characters to come out of the series yet. Tom Hiddleston once again kills it as Loki, a character that never seems to become tiresome. And I love me some LOKI! Chris Hemsworth again proves his leading ability as he provides his most entertaining performance as Thor yet. I love his fight scene moment with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk - it was a bold, but an entertaining successful idea. Thor: Ragnarok most definitely stands on its own two feet as the strongest in the Thor trilogy.
Move over Deadpool, I think Thor: Ragnarok is one of the funniest movies you will see all year. The soundtrack is as stunning as the visuals. The story stays simple and allows the audience to go on this adventure with Thor, Hulk, Loki and everybody else. And did I already mention how much this movie will make you love Loki more?
