M&M Diary - Surviving Middle School

Can you believe we are at the end of August already?!! Sorry, that I have been M.I.A for awhile, but I would like to report that I survived the first week of my baby girl in middle school. In her school district middle school starts at 7th grade up until 9th grade. She is a late bloomer, but I'm happy she had one more year to prepare for the transition. The past few weeks of getting her ready and preparing mentally for the both of us has been exhausting and has been a hard transition for me. I was never given a script on how to take care of all that a middle schooler needs. But as always, the mother instincts kick in and everything on the checklist was checked off right before school started. We changed her room from a young girl kid room into more of a teenage comic room – packing away six big bags full of her old things. It kind of makes you sad as a parent seeing the small toys that they grew up with packed away, but it's only a sign that they is growing up. She also expanded her closet with teenage style clothes (Forever 21) and athletic wear, and I bought her a grown-up Harley Quinn backpack and lunch bag. I even connected her a phone! That is a huge step for me, but it was about time for safety purposes.

Going from the same routine every year in elementary school, middle school is a whole different ball game. She now has five core classes, and is in athletics and the band. She never really played any sports except soccer when she was like three years old. But she going to try out for the cross country & track team and maybe soccer. She is also playing the flute. I am really proud of her, because these are classes she wanted to do. As she always tells me, "I want to try new things". My little girl is super quiet and shy, so this is a huge step up from elementary school. We already had a meltdown though with her trying to figure out the whole locker combination thing, but if you remember back in days when you are in middle school - it is a little overwhelming even remember the numbers. But after about 20 tries, she finally got it. Well after her breakdown of course.

I decided to start a M&M Diary series on my blog – surviving middle school. I know I have a long way to go. But can't wait to see her grow up and see what adventures lies ahead. Here is a couple of snaps on her first couple of days and also quick DIY of the her comic magnets we made to decorate her locker. Enjoy! - xo Mel

DIY LOCKER MAGNETS

Here is a little step by step, on how we changed these comic buttons that we found from the BoxLunch into locker magnets. Super easy to make and in less than 15 minutes, you can have super cool magnets to hang in your locker.

What you need: E6000 | small circle magnet | pliers | a couple of buttons

1. Take out the safety pins from the back with pliers and add a small amount of E6000 on the back of the button.

2. Press the magnet onto the button and hold for about 2 minutes to secure the magnets.

3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 on all buttons.

4. Decorate and enjoy!
